You know how you get some song stuck on your brain and you go around humming it all day? Hopefully for your coworkers, it's not Badonkadonk or Jingle Bells (in the middle of July), because that would just be annoying. I've told you before that my tastes lean mostly toward 70's classic rock, but here's what I've got floating around in my country influenced head this week:
Takin' Off This Pain by Ashton Shepherd. An upcoming 21 year old country singer from Leroy, Alabama. She's been writing songs since she was about eight years old and took up the guitar at age 15. In 2006, she won a contest to be the opening act for Lorrie Morgan, which lead to a recording deal. She's very country, complete with a sweet southern twang and a genuineness about her that's very appealing.
I've got a cold beer in my right hand
In my left I've got my weddin' band.
I've been wearin' it round now for way too long
And I'm more than ready to see it gone.
And I'm the only one who can set myself free.
So, I'm takin off this pain you put on me.
Good Friend and a Glass of Wine by LeAnn Rimes. This 25 year old county singer has been performing hit songs since the age of 13. Her most popular ones are Blue, How Do I Live, I Need You, and Can't Fight The Moonlight. I'm really not a fan of hers, but I do enjoy this song. Like a few other popular singers these days, she has a tendency to mumble her lyrics, which I can't stand (or understand).
Who died and crowned me everybody's everything
I'm even busting my butt through the weekend
By the time I get home there's not an ounce of sanity
Between the dogs, my momma's calls
Is it against the law
For me to get what I need
A good friend and a glass of wine
Someone to say it's gonna be alright
A good friend and a glass of wine
A little pick me up to get me through the night
We talk trash n' we laugh and cry
That kind of therapy money can't buy
Every now and then, every now and then
Every girl needs a good friend and a glass of wine
Flat On The Floor by Carrie Underwood. Oklahoma's very own 25 year old American Idol. Carrie was attending college when she tried out for the show and has since graduated from Northeastern State University. Carrie is scheduled to be inducted in the Grand Ole Opry on May 10th.
Flat On The Floor was co-written by 21 year old country singer Ashley Monroe. She collaborated recently with Ronnie Dunn from Brooks and
Dunn on the song "I Don’t Want To." Her first cd was about to be released when Sony and BMG merged and somehow Ashley's cd got nixed in the fallout. Ashley has a sweet, whisper soft voice. I hope she is able to release her music soon. "I can tell when people mean what they're singing," says Ashley. "It's what all the great country singers had. No matter what they're singing, you feel it, and I love that feeling."
Flat On The Floor has also been performed by Katrina Elam, another 24 year old Oklahoman. Katrina has toured with Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts.
I also heard this song while watching Can You Duet on CMT the other night. Can You Duet is produced by the same folks that make Idol. Naomi Judd is one of the judges; she's country's answer to Paula Abdul. The duet of Kate and Kacey Coppala sang this song. The Coppala twins co-wrote the song "House With No Doors" on George Strait's Troubadour cd.
Now I'm flat on the floor with my head down low
Where the sky can't rain on me anymore
Don't knock on my door cause I won't come
I'm hiding from the storm 'til the damage gets done
Home by Blake Shelton. The elder of this group at 31, Blake, a fellow Okie, is currently dating 24 year old country singer Miranda Lambert. His remake of Michael Buble's "Home" is found on the deluxe edition of his BS cd that was released on the 6th. Miranda loaded the tune on his iPod and Blake started singing it and eventually incorporated it into his show. Miranda sings the backup vocals. I actually like this remake better than the original; there's more a feeling of longing in it. Shelton says he can relate to the song for the same reason Buble wrote it. "I travel a lot and I'm fortunate as a singer to get to do what I do but sometimes I just want to go home," he says. "I get to missing my house, my land, my family, everything that makes home, home." The song "Don't Make Me" on this cd is also excellent.
That Song In My Head by Julianne Hough. The 19 year old cutie from Dancing With The Stars will have her first cd released the 20th of this month. She's won the dancing competition twice, with speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno and Indy Race Car driver Helio Castroneves. Her cd contains a duet with fellow dancing brother
Derek, on a song co-written by one of their sisters. She will be touring this summer with Brady Paisley, Jewel and Chuck (Stealing Cinderella) Wicks. Here's a bit of trivia you may not know, Julianne was one of the Million Dollar Dancers in the short lived game show Show Me The Money hosted by William Shatner.
And the cute guy in the video is Abercrombie & Fitch model and actor Travis Van Winkle. He's appeared in the movie Transformers and on TV's That's So Raven.
You were hangin' your feet off the tailgate of Billy Don's Ford
I grew up in this little bitty of town, never seen you before
You were swayin' in the moonlight while the radio played
And I've
I've had that song in my head all day, yeah
It was a sweet southern soulful thing that got me down deep
You caught me starin' at you but your smilin' back at me
Started slingin' that air guitar man, you sure can play
And I've had that song in my head all day
(Chorus)
I don't know who sings it
I keep searchin' the radio
I just wanna hear it
So I can watch that video
I got in my head of a blue-eyed boy
Dancin' in the bed of a two-tone ford
Oh lord, is it love?
I just can't say
But I've
I've had that song in my head all day
I said "How 'bout an autograph for ya, your biggest fan?"
You wrote your name and your number in the palm of my hand
My heart and that big bass speaker were thumpin' away
And I've
I've had that song in my head all day
(Chorus)
