“Please don’t snow. Please don’t snow. Please don’t snow.”
“If it does…. snow enough that I don’t have to work anymore this week, but not enough to knock out my internet.
This I pray, Amen!”
Losing Dish Network is a given. It goes off every time it rains heavy. That is normal, right? I mean normal for satellite reception. (Had to do a Google search. I cracked up when I found the following items.)
Dish Wedgie - Dish Hoodie - Dish Skinz - DishWraps - DishRags
I wonder if these work.
Does anyone out there use protection?
I was saddened by the departure of Lance Smith on CMT’s Top 20 Countdown at the end of last year. Lance was hilarious as the host of this show for the past eight years. I couldn’t imagine anyone stepping into his shoes. Kudos to CMT for replacing him with sexy Evan Farmer. Evan is the perfect choice. I loved him as the host of TLC’s While You Were Out.
Bye, bye Ugly Betty. I never “got you” and didn’t understand what others saw in you in, but to each his own. You leaving will open a time slot that ABC will probably fill with something else I don’t “get.” Because nobody asked me… like they should, because I would be great at that job. Cavemen…seriously. Leno at an earlier time…no way.
My latest TV find is American Pickers on the History Channel. Two guys rummage through old barns looking for items they can sell…or add to their collections.
Hubby hasn’t stopped talking about the “dressing down” that Lucky Spencer gave Elizabeth on General Hospital earlier this week. I can’t remember the last time he has enjoyed seeing someone else "get what’s coming to them" like that. Must have been back in his city council days.
We’re liking the new Lucky, played by Jonathan Jackson. Well actually, he is the old Lucky, because he played this role years ago. Not sure hunky Greg Vaughan would have pulled these scenes off as dramatically.
Over on Y&R, the new Tucker McCall character is now being played by Stephen Nichols. I recognized him immediately as the evil Stefan Cassadine from GH. I also knew he had been on another soap I used to watch. It wasn’t until he walked into a room wearing sunglasses that I shouted out, “oh yeah, Patch from Days.” See Patch wore a patch over one eye….
Too funny.
Only two more weekends till Daytona! Be still my heart.
I’ll fill the waiting time with guest appearances by NASCAR drivers on Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader this week on CMT but Not the 24/7 Jimmie Johnson show on HBO. I get enough of him during the season.

In our family, if you are deathly afraid of something, you don’t let anyone know it. Otherwise you open your email and find this clip from your daughter.
Then a few days later, you reach out the front door for your morning newspaper and find this gift from your brother sitting on the porch.
If only there had been a hidden camera so I could have seen Hubby’s reaction.
Reminds me of this past week’s episode of Modern Family and the Dog Butler. Too funny!
Oh and there was another episode of Modern family that featured this guy. Run Fizbo, run!

If I had never watched "The Sixth Sense", then I wouldn't be so freaked out every time I walk into my kitchen and see the cabinet doors ajar.
The truth of the matter is that this is not an other world visit, it's just that the kitchen is fairly old and the latches don't work so well any more. Still, it unsettles me every time.
We've been in the process of updating the kitchen. Carpet and two different linoleum floors have been replaced with brand new flooring... that I love.
(I can't take a photo in this house without getting a dog in it.
Hi Cricket. No, I'm not stealing your soul)
Ugly blue and white checkered wallpaper has painstakingly been pried off the walls. I disliked that wallpaper since we bought the house over ten years ago. I can't believe it's taken me this long to remove it; except for the fact that it's a total pain to take down. Please people... do not glue paper on your walls.
(Old wallpaper that made my eyes go haywire)
I'm so looking forward to picking out a new paint color. And light fixtures.
Right now there is a hideous dusty ceiling fan hanging on one side of my kitchen, a brass looking lantern light on the other, and a bare bulb above my sink. This mishmash of lighting freaks my Monk self out. Light fixtures are one of the cheapish ways to update a room, but I don't think most people ever think about doing this. Or maybe they procrastinate for over ten years, like yours truly.
Another unsettling sight this morning was checking the temperature before dressing for work. Nineteen degrees with a wind chill that made it feel like two degrees. Crap! I have a tendency to hibernate in such weather.
I've been found a lot lately under a blanket watching Turner Classic Movies. The mere fact that I have time to watch a movie lets you know that television is in a sorry state of late. Normally, I have too much recorded programming to watch movies. But I've viewed "The Mortal Storm", "Casablanca", "Our Vines Have Tender Grapes", "To Catch A Thief", "A Face In The Crowd," "Until They Sail," "So Long At The Fair," and several others. I also watched a movie that was made this decade which starred John Travolta. It stank! Afterward I said, "That's why I watch old movies."
I guess there's just not much on regular TV these days that I enjoy. I watched How I Met Your Mother last night; the first time this season. When it was over I said to hubby, "Huh, remember when this show used to be funny?" What the hell happened to HIMYM? That episode sucked.
This morning I watched Jennifer Hudson's Christmas special that aired last night. That I enjoyed. When Jennifer soulfully and spiritually sang "O Holy Night", I was moved. It was everything the Carrie Underwood special was not. Sorry, but I thought Carrie's show was way too cheesy. Except I enjoyed seeing Sons of Sylvia (the band formerly known as The Clark Brothers). Can't wait till these guy put out an album.
Other than this, I've still been obsessively busy working on my genealogy. Hubby tells everyone, "She sees dead people."

You really have to be a regular viewer of The Young & The Restless to understand the humor behind Stacy Haiduk showing up at the Daytime Emmy Awards yesterday with a dead cat purse. Poor Mr. Kitty!
When last seen he had been dismembered by Zapato, Victor Newman's dog, much to the horror of resident soap crazy lady Mary Jane Benson, aka. Patty Williams Abbott.
Mary Jane promptly poisoned and killed Zapato, much to the horror of the daytime viewing audience.
You go Stacy. I thought your look was fun!

Brad Keselowski wins his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Race for independent car owner James Finch. Unfortunately, Brad spun out Carl Edwards in the process. One of the most dramatic "in the air, on fire" wrecks I've seen.
That cracked me up when they compared Carl's sprint to the finish line to the Ricky Bobby scene in the movie Talladega Nights. If Cousin Carl would have only thought to rip off his clothes.
I have a lot of respect for how Carl talked about the crash in his after race interview.
On a side note, don't miss the upcoming June episode of Man vs. Wild where Will Ferrell eats reindeer eyeballs and rappels down glaciers in Sweden with series host Bear Grylls.

Carrie Underwood won the top honors at the Academy of Country Music Awards last night, being named Top Female Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year. I haven’t been so proud since Reba McEntire earned this honor in 1994. You Oklahoma girls Rock!
And thank you Miss Carrie for taking the opportunity to “hit on” that adorable Matthew McConaughey - hey - hey in your acceptance speech after he announced your win. Again, Oklahoma girls Rock!
If you didn’t watch the program, Matthew told a story about “getting lucky ” in 1987 after telling some girls he custom made boots for George Strait and he even had the next year’s design out in his car if they would like to see them.
Carrie in her speech told Matthew she wanted to see those boots.
It was the funniest line of the night.
The ACM show is about the only award program that I watch these days because it doesn’t contain political BS in the form of acceptance speeches. The show is filled with musical performances and only a handful of awards.
Of course, leave it to an outsider to the county music world to cross this line. Jamie Foxx, who was there to introduce George Strait, rattled on about everything other than Strait, and then he asked the audience to clap for Obama. It was weirdly out of place and uncomfortable. Jamie, know your audience dude.
This crowd was more inline with John Rich’s moving anti-bailout ballad, “Shuttin’ Detroit Down.”
Cause in the real world they're shuttin' Detroit down,
While the boss man takes his bonus paid jets on out of town.
DC's bailing out them bankers as the farmers auction ground.
Yeah while they're living up on Wall Street in that New York City town,
Here in the real world they're shuttin' Detroit down.
Another lowlight of the evening was Miley Cyrus and her coat tail clinging father, Billy Ray. When will this Hanna Montana fad be over? I can’t wait for these two to fade back into the woodwork.
A highlight of the evening came in the form of Trace Adkins.
When he was good, he was very good indeed.
But when he was bad, he was horrid Badonkadonk.
Trace gave a surprising performance accompanied by the West Point Glee Club. The song “Til The Last Shot’s Fired” can be downloaded on iTunes with the proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Trace won Single of the Year for “You’re Gonna Miss This,” a personal song he wrote when his oldest daughter was getting married. It was added to his greatest hits cd and was never intended to be released as a single. His response when it was, “Go ahead, ain’t nobody gonna play it.” Last night after winning he said, “Glad I’m an idiot.”
Congratulations Trace, and Taylor Swift and Jamey Johnson and Dancing With The Star’s Julianne Hough. Here’s a complete list of nominees and winners for the evening.
Now, back to our little Okie Carrie. I’ve mentioned before how incredible she always looks. She just seems to wear the right outfit for every occasion. Last night she had several different dresses. The one she wore when she sang Randy Travis’ hit “I Told You So” was well... different, to say the least. The top part is cute, but then in flows into yards and yards and yards of material. She looked like a little Barbie doll stuck down in the top of a big ol’ birthday cake. The jury’s still out on this one. What do you think of it?

Leave it to the Okie on The Amazing Race to be the only contestant wearing a thong when the challange calls for stripping down to your undies and running through the streets of Novosibirsk, Siberia. Christie Volkmer from Choctow, Oklahoma is running the race with fellow flight attendent Jodi Wincheski from Houston, Texas.
After starting in first position, the ladies fell a little behind on the fifth leg of the race. In the end, they were at the bottom of the pack. Host Phil Keoghan told them they were the last team to arrive at the Pit Stop. Then without cracking a smile, he exposed that they were still in the race. Starting at the rear of the next leg means the ladies will have to complete an extra challenge to remain in the competition. It's a sad tail that I'm sure they are bummed about. Poor Christie will probably be the butt of many jokes this week.
Somebody stop me...

Tomorrow marks five weeks since my hip replacement surgery. I’m posting this today because I will be out of town Wednesday.
This past week has been a difficult one for me emotionally. I was so tired. I finally took some medication and slept most of Friday night and well into Saturday morning. Then I didn’t get dressed or do anything all weekend. Plus, I drank a chocolate milkshake one day and ate apple pie the next. I know, dreadful... I must have been hormonal.
Hubby and I finally got caught up on about two years worth of Heroes episodes. I’m convinced shows like this are better when watched in a shorter period of time. Wish, I would have done this with Battlestar Galactica and Lost.
I’m wanting to just get up and walk already. It’s been so long since I’ve walked correctly that I’m having to practice now by chanting “heel, toe, heel, toe.” It’s easier when performed the proper way. I’m still using the cane for support. I’m just so anxious to have my life back. Slowly but surely. I’m sure this will all be a distant memory very soon. At least I’m driving now.
I need some new tennis shoes; ones that don’t have to be tied. I didn’t even think about this before surgery.
Went to a birthday lunch for a friend of ours at El Chico. Hubby and I rarely frequent the eateries in the mall, which is weird since it’s right by our work. I think it has to do with parking. We had a good time with these folks; shared lots of laughs. They brought the honoree a sopapilla after dinner, minus honey. Where was the honey, you ask? They were out of it. I never have understood this at restaurants. Don’t you know where a grocery store is? Last week Hubby went to Subway and they were out of ham. Out of ham, can you believe it! Why were they even still open. Luckily, I had ordered chicken.
Yesterday afternoon, I ventured out into the back yard. I missed the blooming of my hyacinths this year. They were spent and sad looking. Rain or watering might have helped their journey. I was pleased to see that my rose bushes and the clematis both had new leaves. (Although, I had to look up a past blog post to remember the name Clematis. All I could remember was what Hubby calls it, Chlamydia. Not exactly the same thing.)
Clematis - 2008
There is so much work to do out there. Inside too, as everything is covered in a layer of dust. Dusting has not been a priority; too many other things to tend to. Hubby and I discussed what we were going to do about flooring in the family room this spring. I’m so wanting to get to all my unfinished projects. At least that four foot stack of magazines I had saved for my recovery has diminished. Anytime I can clear a stack of junk around here, it’s good news.

Funny Cartoon: My oldest brother emailed me about last week’s episode of Lost. I think he summed it up accurately.

The other day I wrote about theme songs from day time television shows. Today, I’d like to know what theme song or music do you enjoy from night time television?
Or what show opening do you enjoy watching? For example, who doesn’t enjoy waiting to see what Bart Simpson will write on the chalkboard each week?
Personally, I like the Bond-ish cartoon-y Nerd Herd opening to Chuck. That running stick man dropping out of Zackary Levi’s nose gets me every time.
My vote for favorite show theme song has got to be Saving Grace, as sung by Everlast. (I wrote about it before and posted the video here. Enjoy!) So, what’s yours?
Saving Grace by Everlast
One time around the block
Two times around the clock
Three times, don't cross the little lady (lady)
So pretty and, oh, so bold
Got a heart full of gold on a lonely road
She said, "I don't even think that God can save me" (save me)
(Am I) gainin' ground
(Am I) losin' face
(Have I) lost and found my saving grace
Thankful for the gift my angels gave me
Born alone, we die alone
'n' I'm just sittin' here by the phone
Waitin' for the Lord to send my callin'
Street wise from the boulevard
Jesus only knows that she tries too hard
She's only tryin' to keep the sky from fallin'
Any man who says it's Heaven and Hell
Prob'ly got somethin' useless to sell
You ask me if I'm saved, but what's it to ya?
Blow a quarter, cop another eight
You're runnin' out of high, you're losin' your faith
Throw your hands up and scream, "Hallelujah"
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Amen
One time around the sun
Another year older and my work ain't done
It's time for me to write the final chapter (chapter)
Deal the cards and roll the dice
Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll are my only vice
Tryin' to figure out just what's here after (here after)
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Amen

Yesterday’s mention of The Bold & The Beautiful reminded me how much I’ve always loved their opening music. I don’t even watch this soap, but I can appreciate a snazzy, upbeat theme song. I think this is the best one on daytime television. Evidently they had Dionne Warwick on the show to sing “High Upon This Love” in person as evidenced by the following clip that features John McCook and Tracey Bregman, (who is now back on Y&R.)
Written by Jack Allocco and David Kurtz, with saxophone played by Eric Marienthal. I actually have a cd somewhere around here with this song on it. I love me some sax!
“Fly, high upon this love and touch the stars above.
That’s what dreams are made of.
Bold and beautiful are we, in love eternally.
Forever you and me.”
Speaking of The Young & The Restless, did you know that their theme song, “Nadia’s Theme,” has lyrics to it? Yep, it’s a slow and haunting little ditty that they used to play occasionally at the end of an episode... a long time ago. I haven’t heard the words in years.
Originated as a music cue called "Cotton's Dream" from the 1971 movie Bless the Beasts and the Children. The song was later retitled "Nadia's Theme" after Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci used it for her floor exercises in the 1976 Olympics. Composed by Barry DeVorzon and Perry Botkin, Jr.
(Side note: Nadia is short for the Russian name Nadyezhda, which means Hope. She is married to Bart Conner and they live in Oklahoma.)
Here’s the lyrics to Nadia’s Theme:
Come, dreams of the past
Come with a love that moves so fast
Come, those shiny days
Caught in a young and restless haze
Why did we love
Then run away
So little time
So much left to say
And now its come
Young and Restless dream
You'll never pass this way again
Treat the summer wise.
Reach for the stars while you have time
Your restless dreams
Will lead the way
So dream your dream
And live for each day
I wasn’t able to find a video that included the lyrics. Let me know if you do, okay?
And speaking of soap opera music, there is a very talented Canadian musician who writes many of the songs you hear during the day time stories. Michael Kisur is one of the most famous songwriters you’ve probably never heard of, but I bet you’ve heard one of his songs if your have ever watched a soap opera, Melrose Place, Beverly Hills 90210, The Sopranos, Judging Amy, or CSI.
Visit his website and listen to some of his music. My favorite is “Peace.”
Excuse the cheesy video below and just enjoy the song. (Although some of you might enjoy Okie Thad Luckinbill with his shirt off. In real life he is married to Amelia Heinle, seen here as his onscreen wife on Y&R.)
Peace, it's hard to come by
I swear I saw it once in my baby's blue green eyes
Peace, it's hard to come by
I swear I felt it once, but I brushed it all aside
I feel for you, I really do
I wanted you to stay
I feel for you, like I never do
I wanted you that way
Peace, it's hard to come by
Like a treasure in the sand, or that elusive butterfly
Peace, it's hard to come by
Like a subtle twist of fate that you just can't deny
I feel for you, I really do
I wanted you to stay
I feel for you, like I never do
I wanted you that way
I don't know anything at all
I rise and then I fall
And I don't understand
I don't know but once I could've sworn
That I was never born to run from who I am

Mrs4444 at Half-Past Kissin' Time just blogged about her favorite teen idol. This got me thinking about my own childhood crushes.
My first one was Bobby Sherman. Bobby was a singer and actor who graced the cover of several teen magazines including Tiger Beat. It was the 1968 television show Here Come The Brides that got me hooked on “The Sherman.” The show featured the Bolt brothers and other lumberjacks in Seattle looking for love. David Soul, who later starred in Starsky & Hutch, played one of his brothers. Come on, what six year old little girl doesn't love hunky lumberjacks?
After several appearances on the show Emergency, Bobby Sherman found a calling in paramedic and first aid work. He even started a volunteer EMT foundation. Later he became a deputy sheriff in San Bernardino County.
Bobby Sherman singing Seattle
My second crush came from a 1971 television series, Alias Smith and Jones. Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry were outlaws, train and bank robbers, offered amnesty if they could stay out of trouble for one year. It starred Ben Murphy and Pete Duel.
Duel had previously appeared on numerous TV shows including Gidget and Love On A Rooftop. At the height of his popularity, Pete Duel fatally shot himself while drinking at home. He was replaced by actor Jon Roger Davis (Dark Shadows), who narrated the show. (At one time, Davis was married to Jaclyn Smith).
Ben Murphy has appeared in too many shows to list here. Maybe you remember him in Gemini Man? He played a secret agent that could make himself invisible. (MST3000 alert - watch Riding with Death) Looks like these days, Murphy spends his time playing tennis. Honestly, I thought all these guys were quite handsome.
Oh wait, here‘s a surprise. My third crush comes from a television show too. This time it’s from the soap opera, The Young & The Restless. Starting in 1976, John McCook played Lance Prentiss, love interest of two of the Brooks sisters, Lorie and Leslie. John also sings and has done a lot of theater work. He has been married since 1980 to actress Laurette Spang, (who played Cassiopeia on the original series Battlestar Galactica). It wasn’t until this past year that I realized that “my Lance” was the same actor who could be seen all these years playing Eric Forrester on the soap The Bold & The Beautiful.
10 Questions with John McCook I’ve blogged about my next crush before, but I never realized that he is also my last crush (on a celebrity). How many time have I told you how much I loved me some Patrick Swayze? Ever since he played the role of Orry Main in the 1985 miniseries North and South, I’ve had a thang for "The Swayze." I wanted to be his Madeline. (Madeline was played by the lovely Lesley-Anne Down, who now stars opposite John McCook on The Bold & The Beautiful)
I also liked The Swayze in Red Dawn, Road House, Ghost, City of Joy, etc. And of course, I've already talked about my obsession with Dirty Dancing.
I don’t know if you watched his recent interview with Barbara Walters. It was heart breaking listening to him talk about his battle with cancer. He came across as very open and honest. I couldn't help but shed a tear.
Hubby (my everything) and I have really enjoyed watching his new series on A&E, The Beast. The cinematography of the show absolutely blows me away. It’s very dark and mysterious and the show is very intelligently written. So much so that when I missed a scene recently, I had to pause and have Hubby bring me up to speed. After this past weeks episode, Hubby and I had the following exchange:
OS: Are you loving some Patrick Swayze now as much as I do?
Hubby: No.
OS: Come on, don’t you have just a little man crush on him?
Hubby: Umm, NO!
OS: But he’s such a good actor...

Seriously, are there no talented young actors any more? This latest cast of young characters on the daily soaps are dreadful.
First there was Eden Gerick (Erin Sanders) on The Young & The Restless. She was so bad that they quickly replaced her with Eden 2 (Vanessa Marano). That must have been an interesting casting call. Wanted: actress with same whiny voice as the girl we are replacing. Eden 2 is no better than Eden 1, but I’m not a fan of the whole Baldwin-Fisher-Bardwell clan in general.
Of course, I’m still mad that Y&R killed off Cassie Newman (Camryn Grimes) in 2005. What a waste.
Also annoying is the character of Ana Hamilton (Jamia Simone Nash) who I guess they brought onto the show to sing a few songs. The girl should stick with singing and pass on trying to make a living by acting.
Then there is the latest Newman heir, Abby Carlton (Hayley Erin). This Paris Hilton wannabe couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag as evidenced by the fake crying over her adopted dad Brad’s death (Brad-cicle Don Diamont was fired) this past week. She’s just annoying. And to think they replaced that adorable little Darcy Rose Byrnes, who held this role for so many years, with this grown up model. What a shame.
Is that a pet peeve of anyone else? When some cute child actor goes away to boarding school and comes back as a teenager played by a different actor. Heck, Noah Newman went to summer camp and came back a grown man. Well, played now by a twenty year old actor anyway.
It doesn’t have to be that way either. Think Robin on General Hospital. That role has been portrayed by the same actress, Kimberly McCullough, all these years. She wasn’t always on the show, but they let the character age naturally and brought Kimberly back to reprise the role.
And speaking of GH, who’s this Ethan Lovett (Nathan Parsons) shooting pool with Luke Spencer? He’s cute and has an Aussie accent, but I’m not a fan. He doesn’t open his teeth when he speaks. It remind me of a ventriloquist act. Very distracting.
Next up on Y&R, the return of McKenzie Browning. Played by another new actress of course. I liked Ashley Bashioum’s portrayal of this character and did not enjoy the last two gals at all. The last one being Rachel Kimsey.
I purposely only showed pictures of the actresses I like.
Update: I didn't realize at first that Eden #2 Vanessa Marano was also the same actress who played the annoying April (Luke's daughter) on the Gilmore Girls.

Soap News: Big catastrophe on General Hospital this week. Big enough that the show will be unveiling a new hospital set in April, complete with a new nurse’s station. I still miss seeing nurse Jessie Brewer (Emily McLaughlin) behind the round 7th floor nurse’s station desk on GH? I guess you could say GH is getting a facelift. Not unlike characters Bobbie Spencer (Jackie Zeman) and Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson). Or is that botox? (Who besides me remembers that actress Jackie Zeman once posed in a men’s magazine?) On the show, the wealthy Quartermaine family pay for the Extreme Hospital Makeover.
Reality TV: Watch for Okie Christie Volkmer and her sister Jodi Wincheski on the next Amazing Race when it premieres Feb. 15. These ladies are Southwest Airlines flight attendants. I wonder if that will give them an advantage. Jodi is from Houston, Texas and Christie is from Choctaw, Oklahoma.
Also on the show will be the first ever deaf contestant, Luke Adams. He will be accompanied by his mom, Margie. Gay rights activist Mel White will be racing with his son Mike, screenwriter of the most excellent movie, “School of Rock.” One leg of the race has the contestants traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railroad through a snowstorm in sub-zero temperatures.
America’s Next Top Model starts again on Feb. 25. One of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s ex-girlfriends, Kortnie Coles, is a contestant. She is listed as a 24 year old non-profit organizer from Houston, TX. Answer This... hosts a shot of her wearing the famous “Not Everything Is Flat In Kansas” t-shirt. She should be a lot of fun.
Speaking of NASCAR women... I wonder what ever happened to TLC’s reality show NASCAR Wives. It was supposed to premiere after the Miss America pageant last month.
In The News: Speaking of Pageants... It’s that time of year again here in Lawton, Oklahoma for Cameron University to crown a new queen. Each year the headline in the newspaper catches my eye.
Every year I think the same thing when I read it too, When is the Miss White CU Pageant?
Several earthquakes have occurred in Oklahoma recently. Centrahoma reported a 3.2 on Feb. 3, a 2.4 was recorded between Carney and Chandler on Jan. 29, and a 3.4 the day before that near Amber.
Amber, Oklahoma...home of some Steak(?) restaurant Hubby wants to take me to. Have any of you been there? Let me know if it’s good, okay?
Speaking of wacky... weather, that is. Have you seen the 5-ton ice sculpture of a “shivering” Al Gore. It was revealed by Craig Compeau in Fairbanks, Alaska. Compeau, a self described moderate skeptic of the whole global warming theory, is using the sculpture to raise money for Presbyterian Hospitality House. Participants guess whether this winter will be warmer or colder than it was the winter of 1947-48. Gore was born March 1948. More info at www.frozengore.com.

In an effort to enlighten, as well as entertain, Okie Sister has traveled to a high mountain top in a remote area of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge to consult with the elusive Okie Oracle. Perched high above the lakes and wildlife, the Okie Oracle basks in the serenity and quiet of the unspoiled nature below. The perfect spot to contemplate the chaos and confusion of the everyday world.
Folklore has it that on moonlit nights the Okie Oracle transforms into the great black bison and stand in the middle of Highway 49, daring vehicles to pass without flinching.
The Okie Oracle is knowledgeable in all earthly and otherworld matters and is willing to depart some of this ancient wisdom and advice on us, the lowly masses. If you have an inquiry for the Okie Oracle, email okieoracle@gmail.com and I will again ascend the mountain to obtain answers for you, my readers.
Dear Okie Oracle,
Since you are able to explain things in a simplified way that even I can understand, maybe you can help me out here. I've been so busy enjoying my high definition television programs recorded on my DVR, brought to me through The Dish Network, that I've not been keeping up with the major switch about to occur from analog to digital programming. I keep hearing about it, and converter boxes, and government vouchers. What does it all mean? Why is the government involved in TV viewing? Are my tax dollars being used to help people afford what I consider to be a luxury, not a necessity in life?
Sincerely,
Satellite Viewer
Dear Satellite Viewer,The switch from analog to digital TV only exists to justify having a “crawl”, announcing the transition, annoy me while I’m watching King of the Hill and The Simpsons. I can prove that is the reason because why else would they have the crawl on the high definition channels? These video feeds can only be seen on digital-compliant equipment and they are completely separate from the digital and analog feeds. Exactly how many households have both high-def TVs on satellite or cable *and* analog TVs with “rabbit ears” needing a converter?
The government is involved because, while you consider your money to be YOUR money, they’re pretty sure that your money is THEIR money. They are killing two birds with one stone; if they ignore the Bill of Rights and illegally take your property (cash) BUT give it to someone else (converter box) somehow it all balances out so you can’t really call them sleazy thieves.
Clever, huh?

Hubby has been trying to figure out for a week or more where he had seen a particular actor before. We both recognized his face but couldn’t place his name or exactly what other acting gig we had seen him in, which made asking the magic box rather difficult.
Roger Wilkes showed up on The Young & The Restless as the new love interest of Esther Valentine. Valentine, portrayed by Kate Linder, has been on this show for about 25 years. Linder also works as a flight attendant in real life. Did you ever run into her while flying the friendly skies? Esther is the housekeeper of the wealthy Katherine Chancellor. Katherine had a car accident recently and lost her memory and now everyone thinks she is dead. She was driving her look alike to rehab when the accident occurred and people mistook the woman they found (Marge) as Katherine. Katherine left her faithful servant Esther a big ol’ chunk of her estate in her will. Enter Roger, the con artist.
When I finally looked this guy up for Hubby, I found out Roger is played by actor David Leisure. I perused his past projects and tried to determine why we recognized him. He appeared in two Airplane movies. No, that wasn’t it because I can’t remember that far back. He was on a television show with O.J. Simpson called 1st & Ten. No, that wasn’t it. Although Hubby distinctly, and almost too fondly, recalls the then svelte Delta Burke as being on that show.
We both recall watching Leisure in the 1988 show Empty Nest. It starred Richard Mulligan (Soap) as a retired doctor and widower whose two daughters, played by Kristy McNichol and Dinah Manoff, move back in with him after their marriages fail. David Leisure played their neighbor Charley Dietz. Which is also the character name used when Leisure appeared in an episode of the Golden Girls. (Empty Nest was kind of a spin-off of GG) Rounding out the cast was the colorful Park Overall, whose character Laverne told folksy stories about her home town of Hickory, Arkansas. I think this is where I remember Leisure, but Hubby said he was trying to recall something more recent.
Leisure is one of those actors that has appeared in one episode of many popular shows throughout the years. Turns out we remember him best for something else entirely. Back in the 1900’s before the invention of the DVR, when we were subjected to mind numbing advertising and subliminal messages projected through our television sets in the form of commercials, there was a lovable liar who bombarded our brains and appeared on our screens. Meet Joe Isuzu. Remember this guy? Of course my husband, the car guy would.

The following thought process takes place between 2 am and 5 am ... cue the dramatic music.
I smell urine, or maybe it’s sweaty dog, or Trixie’s dog butt that’s 2 inches from my face. A few minutes later I hear a fart and Jackie emerges from underneath the covers on the far side of the bed where my husband used to sleep. I listen as Jackie waddles through the house, her nails clicking on the hard wood floor. Then I hear the familiar flap of the doggie door. I was hoping that was were she was heading and not some dark corner of the interior. She doesn’t return to the bedroom but instead hops up into the Lazy-boy in the den with her Daddy.
Her Daddy had been gone to a meeting most of the evening. I had spent the time watching episodes from the last season of The 4400. Did anyone else watch that Sci-fi show? It was about a group of people that showed up in Seattle after years of been missing, perhaps having been abducted by aliens. No one aged in all those years, which makes some now younger than their grandchildren. All returned with some special power or ability that they use for evil or for good. Mostly evil, because that makes for a more interesting x-file type storyline as the government agents try to stop them.
I watched two episodes that involved electricity. In the first one, members of opposing sides had been brought together and trapped inside the government building by one of the 4400. They had to work together to end “the game” as the building was trying to kill them. To save everyone, the two leaders sacrificed themselves by using their own bodies to complete an electrical circuit in order to short out the entire building’s electricity. Not a new idea by any means.
Reminded me of one of my favorite Star Trek The Next Generation episodes, Darmok. Captain Picard and Captain Dathon are beamed down to a planet’s surface and must work together against a common enemy. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that the Tamarian Captain Dathon’s language only consists of metaphors from his own cultural experiences: Darmok and Jilad at Tinagra. Temba, his arms open. Chaka, when the walls fell. Picard figures it out in the end but not in time to save Dathon, who had put his life in danger in order to open the lines of communication with this new race.
The Darmok episode reminded me of a movie that came out in 1985 called Enemy Mine starring Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr. A soldier from Earth crashlands on an alien world where he encounters a surviving captain from the race he has been fighting. They are enemies and don’t understand each other, but end up working together to survive.
The second 4400 episode involved bank systems and computers crashing. The source of the disturbance was traced back to a man who was hooked up to life support machines after suffering a stoke. He was using his mind to manipulate the software using the electrical lines. This episode was titled Ghost in the Machine.
Why am I telling you all this? So you will understand what state of mind I was in when I took a bath. What?
I’m in the bathtub and the lights dim for a second. Then a few minutes later, one of the bulbs in the four bulb light fixture burns out. So, I’m thinking that explains why I thought I saw the lights dim. No problem right? Only several minutes later when I’m finished shaving my legs, that light bulb comes back on and now I think I’m going crazy or have been visited by some other world being. I was a little freaked out. Why do these things always happen when I’m alone in the house?
Speaking of house, I’m reminded of a family who “finally got a piece of the pie.” Actually, the theme song, Moving On Up, from The Jeffersons had been running through my mind for a few days now. I read a very funny blog post recently about the use of the word honky and whether it still held any negative meaning. Honky was one of George Jefferson’s favorite slurs. His neighbor Mr. Harry Bentley was played by actor Paul Benedict, who passed away in December, which is another reason I had the wonderful Jefferson show on my mind. Does anyone remember Benedict from Sesame Street? He was a painter on that show in the early 70’s.
Supporting actors and those behind the scenes rarely get the print space of their more famous counterparts when they pass away. This past week I read a small blurb about Bob May’s death. Who was he, you ask? Bob May, an actor and stuntman, was the voice of the Robot on the original Lost In Space television show. “Warning, warning.” “Danger, Will Robinson.” Also passing away recently was Gordon Whitey Mitchell, one of the writers on The Jeffersons, as well as Get Smart, All in the Family, The Partridge Family, Mork and Mindy and many other shows. Gordon was an interesting man with many different careers. He was a jazz musician who played with Benny Goodman and others before coming to Hollywood.
Everyone I’m sure heard about Ricardo Montalban’s death, but what about Don Galloway? He appeared in several episode of Fantasy Island. Galloway was best known for playing Ed Brown on Ironside. He was in numerous movies (including the Big Chill) and television shows. He also played Dr. Buzz Stryker on General Hospital in the mid 80’s. Isn’t that a great name?
What? You don’t lay awake at night and think about dead people? I guess I’m kind of into it. There’s a website I have bookmarked called notable deaths. I think its from Newsday. They never listed the death of Majel Barrett-Rodenberry which I thought was a major slight. But then they haven’t listed anyone’s death since Eartha Kitt. Then I wondered if the person who updates the page might have died. That would be ironic. Maybe they just got laid off like so many other newspaper employees recently.
So, why am I laying awake having such morbid thoughts. Could be that second pot of coffee I made this afternoon. Well, I couldn’t help myself. I was so thrilled to see my beloved box of Gevalia coffee arrive via UPS because I had almost run completely out of coffee. I was down to only one box of Crème Brule flavor that I had stashed away several month ago. I’ve discovered that I’m not a big fan of flavored coffee every day. I just want a big ol’ pot of my Traditional Roast.
Trixie’s making whimpering noises in her sleep. She does this a lot. Do dogs have nightmares? All my dogs are rescue dogs, so I don’t know what their lives were like before I got them. They were between six months and a year old when they came to live with me. All spent some time alone loose on the streets. I wonder if dogs remember that. They do all seem very appreciative to have food to eat every day and a warm bed to sleep in every night.
I’m glad somebody can sleep.

Television: Laura Prepon aka Donna from That 70’s Show will appear in five episodes of How I Met Your Mother. Could she be the mother?
Laurence Fishburne has been cast as Dr. Raymond Langston on the new season of CSI. Country music phenomenon Taylor Swift will appear in one upcoming episode of that show.In April, Scott Bakula and Chevy Chase will appear as software development rivals on three episodes of Chuck. Remember Chuck promising his sister that he would find their dad in time for her wedding?
Bakula is also scheduled to appear with Andre Braugher in a new Ray Romano series, Men of a Certain Age, airing later this year on TNT.
Idol Music: First of all, who besides me can’t stop singing David Cook’s Light On?There’s a DVD out about gold medal Olympic snowboarder Shaun White called Don’t Look Down. Evidently this was aired on ESPN and is now available via Netflix. The music from this video is coming out on a soundtrack this week.
Don’t Look Down features music from American Idol contestant, Australian cutie, Michael Johns. There is a beautiful duet on it with fellow Idol singer Brooke White.
Bubbly Brook’s cd, Songs From The Attic, is already out. She’s done a remake of Aerosmith’s Dream On (why?) and Coldplay’s Yellow.
Melinda Doolittle, who also didn’t win the Idol title, has a cd coming out February 3. She has a great pop, jazz, soulful sound. Everything R&B used to be.
Kelly Clarkson’s new cd, All I Ever Wanted, debuts March 17. The first single released is My Life Would Suck Without You. With Suck being the operative word. I don’t particularly care for this song, but the poster for it is... um... interesting.
In Print: Oklahoma rockers Hinder are now immortalized in a comic book based on the band’s touring experiences. I’m sure that even though the book has naked women sitting at their feet on the front cover, it’s totally PG... and PC.The iconic Stan Lee is working with Showtime to develop a show based on Perry Moore’s novel Hero about gay superhero Thom Creed, a high-school basketball player hiding his sexuality.
Remember the last show Stan Lee brought us, Who Wants To Be A Superhero? It was a campy reality show where every day people could act on their secret desire to be super. My favorite was Fat Momma with her belt of doughnuts. She wanted to help people who were down about themselves or being teased for being different.
Stan Lee’s character Spiderman had a special edition recently with a cartoon Barack Obama. The Inauguration Issue sold out quickly and has now gone into a second printing.
Okie Sister thinks the country could really use a new superhero in DC named Foreign Policy Woman.
In The News: Edward Vaughn, President of the Alabama NAACP made an arse of himself recently when he stated his objections to the Mobile Azalea Trail Maids being the only representation of the state in the upcoming inaugural parade. He, of course, preferred an all black group represent. He said the Maids remind him of slavery days and that their appearance would make Alabama a laughingstock. Little did he know that his racist comments were the only thing being laughed at.
The Azalea Maids are fifty senior girls from Mobile County who must have a high academic record and knowledge of state history, landmarks, and current events. It should be noted that this is a racially integrated group of ladies. They represent their state at many events wearing period costumes representing the colors of the Azaleas that line Mobile’s streets. The reason they picked this particular time period is because they feel it represents Southern Hospitality.
Fiddle-dee-dee. I don't no nothin' 'bout being a maid. I'd like to be a southern belle, but only if I can portray this one.
NASCAR: Only 20 more days until the Budweiser Shootout in Daytona, the official start of the 2009 racing season. Four extra cars will be in this year’s race, all wildcard picks. No doubt one will be Tony Stewart in the new Stewart-Haas Office Depot - Old Spice car.

Why do people watch American idol? For moments like these:
Alex Wagner-Trugman, sweet kid, seems sincere, very witty. I think he was being serious in his interview, but I about bust a gut laughing from the delivery.
Watch the video here.
"I used to teach myself to sing
In my closet
Late at night
Apparently there was a bunch of mold in there
I ended up getting really sick
It was a fun story."
Host Ryan Seacrest, covered it up well, but at the end of the show he gave a high five to a blind contestant. D’oh!

Tech Stuff: I’m loving me some Google Reader these days. I finally discovered enough blogs that I enjoy reading, that I had to get them all organized on one page. I was very jealous of Bloggers feature of updating their blogrolls. “Don’t know if this here TypePad has that ability or not. If it does, I reckon I ain’t figured out how.” I picked this particular reader because Hubby and I already have a shared calendar on Google. Okiedoke is hosting the annual Okie Blog Awards. Oklahoma bloggers can nominate and vote on their favorite Oklahoma blogs. The site has links to many fellow Okie bloggers. TV Alert: What could possibly make me watch Barbara Walters? The Swayze. Yep, Patrick Swayze in his first interview since being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Wednesday night ABC will air “Barbara Walters Special - Patrick Swayze: The Truth.” I wonder if she will ask him important questions like, “What kind of tree would you be?” Can you tell I’m not a big fan of the Ba-Ba Wa-Wa? I used to be. I think it has something to do with that awful The View show. I’ve never been able to watch that mess. A major pet peeve of mine is over-talking, which these ladies do all the time. If everyone talks at once, nobody can be heard. Which, for them, is no great loss. The show's concept was supposed to be different women with different points of view. In reality, it’s Elizabeth’s point of view against everyone else’s collective liberal point of view and one airhead that doesn’t have a point of view. Basically, I don’t relate to any of these women. They don’t represent me or anyone I know in lifestyle, morals or values. The end.
Racy News: Indy driver Danica Patrick ended the year as she began it, receiving another speeding ticket in Scottsdale, Arizona. Danica was clocked doing 54 in a 35 mph zone. She paid the $196 fine on Wednesday. The last ticket, for doing a whopping 57 in a 40 mph zone, sent the race car driver to traffic school, which Okie Sister finds extremely amusing. Wouldn’t a better punishment be to have her do community service and teach the defensive driving course? Or here’s another idea, maybe the Scottsdale police could stop targeting her Mercedes. Jealous much? Granted Danica shouldn’t be breaking any traffic laws, but don’t you think every cop in town knows who she is. She wouldn’t be a danger driving through your town at three times those speeds. Which she is NOT doing by the way. Maybe they just like pulling her over to talk to her.
Field Trip: The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge will conduct “In Search of Eagles” interpretive programs for the general public during January and February 2009. Participants will be taken by bus into the Special Use Area, where they will search for bald and golden eagles. Bring your binoculars. Call the Visitor Center, (580) 429-2151, for dates and time.
In Memoriam: It was tragic news this week to hear of the passing of Kelly Preston and John Travolta’s son Jett. No parent should ever have to bury their child. I’m sure there will be a worldwide outpouring of love and condolences to this family. May that bring them some comfort at this time.
What do you possibly say to a grieving parent? No words come to mind that don’t sound like clichés. What about all the parents out there that don’t have adoring fans? How do they cope?
Locally, another sixteen year-old child died this week. Cache, OK high school student Paige Bivans was thrown from the pick-up truck she was traveling in when the seventeen year-old driver lost control while speeding down a rural road. Paige was the only one not wearing a seatbelt. Paige was an honor student, active in many school clubs, sports teams, and her local church group. She had worked this holiday season at the mall in Lawton as one of Santa’s elf. She was a beautiful young woman. Such a tragedy.

Let me say for a third time this year how much I’m diggin’ me some Trace Adkins? There’s a special running for the next couple of weeks on GAC (Great American Country) called Trace Adkins X Days.
"Adkins dedicated ten days to performing for 10,000 United States military personnel in partnership with the USO; traveling to remote forward operating bases (FOB's) in Iraq and Afghanistan." Trace narrates the special and tells about the moments from the September trip that touched him the most. What moved Okie Sister was Trace standing in front of our troops in Bagram, Afghanistan singing "Arlington." That was extremely emotional.
Trace earned the 2007 USO Merit Award for his support of the military. (For a picture slideshow of the tour, go here.)

The shows I watch nowadays are spread all over the place. I have to admit that I didn’t have a clue what network some of them were on. So, I spent Sunday morning educating myself and searching the internet for the starting times for new episodes of all my favorites. December is a great time to get caught up and clear off the ol’ DVR for the upcoming midseason shows. Here’s what I learned (because I like to share). With the cancellation of Eli Stone, that puts the number of shows I watch on ABC at two: Lost and Dancing with the Stars. They might pick up one more January 6, if Homeland Security USA is any good. It looks like a show Hubby will like. Lost returns January 21. Dancing stars return March 9. CBS still has me with How I Met Your Mother, The Amazing Race, Ghost Whisperer, and Survivor. With those last two wearing pretty thin. The two reality shows just ended their seasons. (If you've not seen the photo spread of the HIMYM cast in EW, you must click here.) Over on TNT, I watch Saving Grace and The Closer. New show Leverage has potential; it’s on Tuesdays. Next year’s Trust Me looks promising, although putting the excellent actor Tom Cavanagh in a series seems to be the kiss of death; even though I personally have enjoyed everything he’s been in. Also stars Eric McCormack. It premiers January 26 following a new Closer. Saving Grace doesn’t return until March. USA has the most innovative shows with Psych, Burn Notice, and Monk, which all began again in January. But in my opinion, Monk has never been as good as the first season. Hubby watches In Plain Sight and Law & Order Criminal Intent when they are on. When I was growing up... television shows were in black and white, there were only four channels, and you had to get up and walk over to the set to change the channel.
NBC surprisingly leads with the most shows watched: Chuck, Crusoe, Life, Heroes, and Medium. Medium is wearing a little thin too; hopefully it will be better when it returns February 2. And yes, I am surprised I’m watching Crusoe. It’s different than anything else on...that’s so rare. If that Philip Winchester wasn’t so handsome, I probably would have taken a pass. The last episode of Chuck, "Chuck Versus Santa Claus," was one of the best yet. It paid homage to one of my favorite holiday movies, Die Hard. Reginald VelJohnson even repised his role as Sergeant Al Powell. The man hasn't aged in 20 years.
American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance and 24 are the only shows FOX has not cancelled yet. Hubby watches COPS, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, House and Prison Break. I’ve been waiting for the new Eliza Dushku show Dollhouse to premiere; it got pushed back to February 13. Jack Bauer and 24 finally return on January 11 and 12. Idol airs the next two nights.
Guilty pleasure: I’m really enjoying the CW show Privileged about a young writer hired to tutor two sisters living with their grandmother, played by Anne Archer. It's based on the book "How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls" by Zoey Dean. New episodes run on Tuesdays until Reaper returns to that time slot on March 17.
If I'm missing anything else good, let me know. Elsewhere Hubby likes Damages on the FX, which returns January 7. Battlestar Galactica returns for its final episodes starting January 16 on the Sci-Fi Channel. A&E has the most anticipated new show of the new year, The Beast starring Patrick Swayze. It premieres January 15.

Two news blurbs came out this week that caught my eye because they both concern television. The second report was from MTV. You remember them, they used to play music videos. After a significant drop in viewership from their core demographics of 12-34 year-olds, MTV will be revamping their lineup. (Does this mean that they finally realize they are producing crap that even a 12 year old is too smart to watch?) To me it’s very simple... MTV should have grown up with their core audience, the now Baby Boomers who watch more television, because we were the original MTV Generation. *PPS is a pop-psychology term used to describe an adult man who is socially immature. First was a report from Deloitte. You know them, they are the auditors that verify the winners on awards show... Deloitte and Touche. Their report, "The State of the Media Democracy," reveals that young people watch less TV than older people. Millennials (age 14-25) watch 10.5 hours per week. GenXers (age 26-42) watch 15.1, Baby Boomers (age 43-61) watch 19.2 hours and Matures (age 62-75) watch 21.5 hours. Conclusion, the older you are the more TV you watch. Of course, this is on average and there must be exceptions. For example: Okie Sister, who falls in the Baby Boomer category, watches probably 30+ hours per week.
To achieved this, MTV will be making 16 new reality shows. (Uh-oh!) The producers of some of the shows are Sean Combs, Matt Stone & Trey Parker, Donald Trump and Nick Lachey. Their focus seems to be on video taping college kids.
I guess they still don’t get it. They are going to need a lot of luck to stay on the air if the numbers above are correct. After all, MTV is fighting for the young audience that only watches 10.5 hours of television per week. It’s dire straits for MTV. (pun intended) They've had two long years of serious employee layoffs. Plus, one of their most popular shows for the past ten years, TRL (Total Request Live), just came to an end. Let us not forget that MTV stands for Music Television whose original purpose in 1981 was to play rock and roll music videos hosted by VJ’s. Then came Michael Jackson and things moved from rock to pop music. In the early 90’s, MTV started playing hip hop videos. That would be when Okie Sister stopped watching, as I’m sure many other Baby Boomer’s did as well. And don’t even get me started on VH1 (Video Hits One, whose original purpose was to play adult contemporary music videos) because they are just as bad if not worse.
Instead they, like Michael Jackson, suffer from a bad case of The Peter Pan Syndrome*. Trump included.

Okay, remember the Saving Grace episode I told you about called "Do You Love Him?" It was the one were Barry Switzer appeared as himself. He was also a former owner of Grace’s car.
From the TNT website: "The door of Grace’s Porsche gets knocked off when a drunk driver slams into it, the impact letting loose thousands of dollars in cash that had been hidden by a previous owner.... The investigation eventually entails a murdered highway patrol officer and a wealthy developer."
Well this stuff only happens on a make believe television show, right? Or does it?
Foreign Money, IDs Found In Car
By Malinda Rust, staff writer
Lawton Constitution
December 17, 2008
Lawton police contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation Tuesday morning to help them determine why a local businessman found a bag containing foreign currency and multiple ID cards was discovered inside the door panel of a Fort Sill soldier’s vehicle.
According to an LPD report, a worker at The Glass Doctor, 7 NW 2nd, was changing or installing the glass on the driver’s side window sometime between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. when he found a “suspicious bag” behind a door panel and called police. The officer came to the scene, retrieved it and entered it into the property log at the station, the report said.
LPD Capt. Will Hines confirmed that the FBI was called in to assist officers, but neither were able to provide a conclusion Tuesday evening as to where the bag, containing money and IDs, could have come from or who left it there.
Dave Porter, owner and operator of Glass Doctor, said in his three years of running the business he has come across some strange items, but the black case was “probably one of the most intense.”
“There was just an enormous amount of Afghan cash and all different kinds of IDs,” Porter said. “They were all from the U.S., but they were from all different states, like I saw some from Texas. ... I was kind of scared to touch it after that.”
After finding the case, which Porter said resembled a small day planner and “had ‘terrorist’ written all over it,” he immediately called the vehicle owner, who is a soldier at Fort Sill. Porter asked him if he had just purchased the car because workers found something hidden in the door panel, and he had to call the police. The car owner said he was on his way, so Porter called the police.
“(The owner) said he did just buy it,” Porter said. “and I told him that was probably a good thing. ... Turns out the guy’s legit and the vehicle was traded somewhere in Dallas.”
Investigators spent the rest of the day trying to piece together the car’s history.
So what made Porter call the police?
“All the money, I mean, it was a lot,” he said. The money, which Porter said had huge numbers on the bills, appeared to be from Afghanistan. “There was a bunch of other things in there, like some prescriptions, but I didn’t want to thumb through all that stuff. It shocked me. ... He was a military guy, which I immediately thought ‘spy,’ but your mind just starts racing when you find something like that.”
Investigators came to pick the car up for further analysis and to search the rest of the car, Porter said. If anyone knows anything about this crime, call Crime Stoppers at 355-INFO.

NASCAR: The Ride of their Lives airs Saturday December 13 on CMT. A retrospective of the first 60 years of the sport. The story of family bonds and personal struggle, rebellion and teamwork. Hosted by Kevin Costner.
You can also go to CMT.com and see a music video of Kevin Costner and Modern West's new song, "Backyard" featuring several drivers and fans. Didn't know Kevin could sing? Well, that's a matter of opinion.

It you are lucky enough to be as old as I am, than you can remember what a real talk show was all about; getting to know and learn interesting things about celebrities. Not this plug your book - movie - show, but don’t ask me anything personal BS that transpires today. I’m talking about the glory days of Merv Griffin, Dick Cavett, Tom Snyder, Mike Douglas and even Dinah Shore. Heck, some of you may be too young to have ever even watched the great Johnny Carson. That’s just sad. Luckily some of the interviews with these icons in the business are available online. You should check them out. And you should run, don’t walk to your DVR and record Shatner’s Raw Nerve. The two episodes I viewed had guests Valerie Bertinelli and Tim Allen. They talked about religion, forgiveness, and addiction among other things. Each brought a meaningful item from home for a grown-up show and tell. Some people have a fascinating way of reinventing themselves. The old adage, "when one door closes another one opens," certainly applies to Mr. William Shatner. Starting his career on radio and Broadway, he’s since acted in movies, starred in several television series, authored numerous science fiction books, is a successful pitchman and an expert equestrian, and now he’s transformed himself into talk show host.
What a pleasant surprise (because I hadn’t heard anything about it) to run across his new show Shatner’s Raw Nerve. This thirty minute talk show on the biography channel puts interesting celebrities in the hot seat opposite the American Icon that is Bill Shatner. (Sorry Canada, he’s ours and you can’t have him back.) And guess what? He’s very good at talking or should I say listening, which is what the best talk show hosts actually do. People seem to open up to him in a very personal, intimate way.
New episodes air Tuesday nights with repeats throughout the week. Upcoming guests include Kelsey Grammer, Judge Judy, Drew Carey, Wayne Brady, Jenna Jameson, Scott Baio, Fran Drescher, Leonard Nimoy, Jimmy Kimmel and Jon Voight.
The set of the show has two chairs facing each other, so host and guest are very close in a therapeutic kind of way. This Trekkie can’t help but be reminded of the captain’s chair on the bridge of the Enterprise when looking at the shape of those gray boxy chairs. Too funny! All they need are control panels on the arms with buttons you push for special effects.
